A Welcome Message from the Chairman
2012 will see many changes in our board composition and in the services provided by the staff. Recently the staff has partnered with the U of I Extension Service and the Granite City Economic Development staff to provide services at the Granite City High School. In coordination with the school staff, we are working with a group of sophomores, to provide information on the “soft skills” necessary to succeed in a job. In addition there will be a “hands-on” project over the summer, which will assist this group of student start a business. We are also looking forward to our fifth “Career Day” at a local school district, and to our 21st Jobs+ Job Fair, an annual event partnering with St. Clair County to help employers find workers. We are awaiting word on a large grant application that would help us work to retain jobs in our area by assisting firms that are struggling to stay afloat. This grant would build on a successful model from Michigan, and we have formed a partnership with 31 (thirty-one) counties along the western portion of Illinois. We continue to collaborate with agencies in the metro region on various projects, including the “Sustainable Communities” and a customized training project with our partners at St. Louis City. We are always looking for other opportunities that will allow us to better serve the community.
